Wednesday Life Drawing Sessions

Well, this last week was the first Wednesday Evening Life Drawing session that I've run. It was a lot of fun, and I hope that next time even more people show up. I took off the whole day from work to get ready for it, (not knowing exactly what to expect). As a consequence I got to attend the daytime life drawing. There was not a model, so us artists had to take turns modeling. Unfortunately, I was not able to sketch myself as a model, but here's what I did get.

These were the tree sketches I did get. I wish I had something more than my moleskine, but it was fun. I tell you, my 20 minute pose definately helped me empathize with my models. I promise nothing longer than a 20 minute pose.

Here is the model from the evening session that I ran, and the final drawing I ended up with.

Working the Studio

I just started moving into a studio in Houston. Still not much up there, but I figured I should start trying to put out as much work as possible while there. It is easier to focus. I've started three pieces so far. Nothing done yet, but here are some previews.

Tree Zombies

I was noticing a lot of dead and dying trees along the new jogging path. I don't know if this is a result of the path (hopefully not) or just the dry weather. Anyway, I thought the were cool and kinda creepy looking. I'm going to try and post more.

Brazosport Art League Daytime Model

Here are some sketches from the daytime life drawing session at the Brazosport Art League. Didn't have enough time to really work on the face. Anyway, learned a lot in preparation for the first night-time session. Can't wait.

Out Of Gas

Ok, so here's what has become of the Mower Heads so far. Did this in class last night. I think it needs some more work, but maybe as a painting (i keep saying that don't i?).

I was walking through Lowes the other day, picking up paint for the front hall. I walked down the lawn mower aisle to get some prices, and everywhere I looked I saw heads. So here's a sketch of what I thought, and maybe there will be paintings to follow.

Onion Moon Sketch

Here is the latest Glassell post. I wanted to do a painting with an onion moon, and this ended up being a sketch for that painting. It's charcoal and pastel on collaged tissue paper. I really liked it.

I caught this picture at the park today on lunch. The tree in the back was very dynamic compared to the ones in the front.

Drafty Room

This is the piece from class last night. I'm not too happy with it. I wanted to make the figure look more unsteady, like they might fall over. I appologize for the quality on this. Since my camera's gone out I'm using my cellphone.

In the Woods

Here is the latest peice from my Life Drawing class. There are a few problems still in it, but I think when it's done it'll be really good. I fought over this one. The way the model was sitting, her legs were folded in an interesting form, but all the story was in her face and shoulders to me. I started out with a much smaller figure on the peice, but had to keep increasing the size. I'm going to add some more elements to the background, but I'm still trying to figure those out.

Sisyphus on a Good Day

Here is the drawing from class this Tuesday. I am planning on turning it into a painting. Hopefully it will get better in the process. I really need to go buy some more materials this weekend. I'm running into a wall with this gray pastel, I think it makes me try too hard for a sculptural look.

Not a charcoal artist. That being said, I was pretty happy with the way this sketch turned out from class last night.

Kicking an Ogre

Worked on this sketch before and during class last night. Started with the kicking form (Tae Kwon Do on the brain).

Birds Off a Wire

Got the idea for this sketch while driving home from work yesterday. There were several little birds on the wire, and they kept falling down to the ground like leaves. The way they moved was really cool, and although I know this didn't capture it, I wanted to try.

Floating Planet

Floating through space like a planet. In the warm glow of a distant star, the only way to travel. This sketch is really light, and didn't scan so well, I appologize. I love the idea of being in space, just in space, not a spaceship in space. I think that's the real goal of astronomy.

When I started this pose, it looked like someone falling. But, somehow it seemed to slow. That's what made me think of space. Enjoy.

Tree at Glassell

Did this sketch while waiting for class to start. The Glassell is such a big cool space, a tree would look good in proportion to it.

Votan - Lord of the Horizontal Drum

Here is Votan. Did you know? ... He was on Wikipedia today, and now he isn't Norse. Inbetween lines of code I was surfing a little and saw this article on Votan on Wikipedia. I thought the glyph looked like a cool template, and so designed this guy of it.

Tree Shadow

The tree looking at itself in my window, casts a shadow on my wall. Strange, I don't remember asking him in.
